What we found inside a 12-year-old air handler in Jacksonville

The homeowner called about a musty smell when the AC kicked on. Here is what the coil, drain pan, and blower actually looked like — and why the fix was cheaper than the "new system" they'd been quoted.

The call started the way a lot of ours do: “There’s a musty smell, but only when the AC first kicks on. Two companies told me I need a new system.”

The system was 12 years old. It cooled fine. What it didn’t do was dry out — and that turned out to be the whole story.

What we actually found

The drain line was partially blocked. Not fully — fully blocked lines announce themselves with water on the floor. This one was draining slowly, which meant the drain pan stayed wet long after each cooling cycle ended. In a Jacksonville summer, that’s months of standing moisture in a dark, warm cabinet.

The coil had a visible biofilm layer. Not the dramatic black fuzz people picture when they hear “mold” — a thin, grey-green film on the downstream face of the coil, exactly where condensation sits longest. This is the growth pattern we see most often in Florida: unremarkable to look at, but positioned directly in the airstream.

The blower wheel was loaded with dust. Dust on a wet surface is food. The combination — moisture plus organic dust plus darkness — is the entire recipe.

Why it smelled only at startup

When the system sits idle, the cabinet air equilibrates with whatever is growing in it. The first 60–90 seconds of a cycle push that cabinet air — and whatever it carries — into the ductwork and out the supply vents. Once the system runs for a few minutes, the effect dilutes. That’s why the smell was a startup smell, not a constant one.

What the fix actually cost

No new system. The job was:

  1. Clear and flush the drain line, then treat the pan
  2. Professional coil cleaning
  3. Blower wheel cleaning
  4. A correctly sized MERV 13 filter and a conversation about change intervals

Total: a fraction of the quoted replacement — and the startup smell was gone the same week.

What we’d tell any homeowner with the same symptom

A musty smell at startup is one of the most common calls we get, and it’s almost always a moisture management problem before it’s an equipment problem. Ask anyone quoting you a replacement one question first: “Show me the coil and the drain pan.” If they haven’t looked, they don’t know yet.
